Walking the Knoyles

The next Walking Group walk is being organised by Roger and will take place on Friday 9 August 2019. We will meet at the East Knoyle Village Hall car park (50p per car) at 09.15 for a 09.30 start. The post code for your Sat Nav is: SP3 6AE.

Walk organisers :

Roger has provided the following information about the walk:

  • East Knoyle is situated just off the A350, some 9 miles south of Warminster. Driving time from Timsbury is approximately 1 – 1 ¼ hours via A362, Radsock, Frome, Longleat to junction with the A36. Turn right for one junction then turn right again on A350 for East Knoyle, about 8 miles. Take the second marked turning for the village NOT the first sign posted. Car Park is ahead but make sure you turn up to the right past the obvious Post Office and Church to Car Park next to the Village Hall.
  • The walk is 6 miles long.
  • When the route was reconnoitred several times it was really bone dry but still there were some really wet areas.
  • The terrain is fields, paths, woodland, bridle paths and lanes. There are some ascents and descents but nothing out of the ordinary. (Check the route profile in Walking the Knoyles Route Map.pdf). There are some stiles but mostly gates. Wild grasses and nettles are quite tall so wear clothing with arm/leg protection and of course sensible hiking boots.
  • We break with tradition as we arrive at The Fox and Hounds  for lunch which is about ¾ mile from the East Knoyle car park. We will either ALL walk that distance back to the cars, some 15-20 minutes downhill after lunch, OR once numbers are known if enough people come with spaces in their cars, having registered at the East Knoyle Car Park those one or two cars could then be driven up to the The Fox and Hounds and be left in the car park there and the drivers ferried back to the start point. It’s 5 minutes each way, and then the walking group could be ferried back to the East Knoyle Car Park at the end. Sounds a little complex but it is quite straight forward if we have enough cars.
