The family had lived in India and his mother died during the Indian Mutiny of 1857.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walter was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge and was called to the bar of the Inner Temple on 17<sup>th<\/sup> November 1869.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 14<sup>th<\/sup> 1870 he married Alice Mortimore at Holy Trinity, Paddington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He took up a position as Justice of the Peace. The local J.P.s held sessions in Docking and Hunstanton each month. Walter was also on the Board of Guardians of the Docking Poor Law Union. The Docking Union owned and ran the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.workhouses.org.uk\/Docking\/\">Docking Workhouse<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/nd9F9dQGvtrK81BY7\">Heacham Rd west of Docking<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walter was also active in local church and charity ventures. During the year, Walter and Alice attend the coming of age celebration of Prince Albert Victor, son of Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) at nearby Sandringham House. Walter and Alice&#8217;s son Frank was born in August.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alice Hunt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-d0921e6e wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized wp-container-content-d50df0bc\"><a href=\"https:\/\/selwyn-family.me.uk\/~chris\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/MotherClose.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"645\" height=\"672\" src=\"https:\/\/selwyn-family.me.uk\/~chris\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/MotherClose.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19738\" style=\"width:100px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/selwyn-family.me.uk\/~chris\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/MotherClose.jpg 645w, https:\/\/selwyn-family.me.uk\/~chris\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/MotherClose-288x300.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Alice<br>(1844-1926)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group wp-container-content-3cf5a658 has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>Born February 4<sup>th<\/sup>, 1844 at Champion Hill, Camberwell, the eighth child of William Mortimore and Harriet Foster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 14<sup>th<\/sup> 1870 Alice married Walter Freeman Hunt at Holy Trinity, Paddington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alice and Walter spent the first 10 years of their married life living at <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/d5dWJKTA1JS8f12H6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">102, Palace Gardens Terrace, Kensington<\/a> London, and then moved to Sedgeford in 1880.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from her duties in the home, Alice was an amateur photographer in the early years of popular photography. She took pictures of her family in singles and in groups and of sites in and around North Norfolk. She also took her camera on visits to family around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alice&#8217;s collection of glass plates survives and <a href=\"https:\/\/selwyn-family.me.uk\/~chris\/wordpress\/ancestry-resources\/hunts-of-sedgeford\/alice-hunts-photographs\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"19126\">an extensive study<\/a> of them is featured on this website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following her husband\u2019s death, Alice and and the younger children returned briefly to Surrey before moving to Norfolk at Lovell\u2019s Hall, Terrington St. Clements. A spell in Heighington, Lincolnshire followed. Eventually Alice and Gertie settled in Felmingham, presumably to be near Nona and her young family in Aylsham. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alice\u2019s interest in photography waned in her later years, although she continued to be an avid recorder of her family\u2019s life and achievements. He attended Rev. Buckland&#8217;s preparatory school at Laleham near Sunbury before going on to Eton. Here he won many prizes and rowed for his house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ernest died of influenza at 7 Cromwell Rd., London, the home of his uncle Sir Frederick Seager Hunt M.P., in 1889. He attended Haileybury School and went on to a long and distinguished career in the army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reggie served with several regiments beginning with the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Battalion Norfolk Regiment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his time with the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Hussars, he fought in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Boer_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boer War<\/a> (where family legend has it that he was laid out for dead and was saved only by waggling a finger).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After moving to the 1<sup>st<\/sup> King&#8217;s Dragoon Guards, he was stationed in Lucknow when the Great War broke out and the regiment travelled to the Western Front via Marseille in late 1914. They were involved in action at Festubert in May 1915. In June 1916, Reggie was attached for a short period to the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\/4<sup>th<\/sup> Seaforth Highlanders as 2<sup>nd<\/sup> in command and fought at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Attacks_on_High_Wood\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Attacks_on_High_Wood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">High Wood<\/a> on the Somme. Later in that year he was promoted to temporary Lt.Col. and given his own command of the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion of the King&#8217;s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment which he held until March of 1918 serving with them at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Arras_(1917)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Battle of Arras<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Passchendaele\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Passchendaele\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<sup>rd<\/sup> Battle of Ypres<\/a> (Passchendaele). After a spell training the Iraqi army in the U.K., Reggie was requested to join the Middlesex Yeomanry with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Desert_Mounted_Corps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Desert Mounted Corps<\/a> and fought up through Palestine ending up at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capture_of_Damascus_(1918)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Capture of Damascus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reggie was mentioned in dispatches twice and was <a href=\"https:\/\/selwyn-family.me.uk\/~chris\/wordpress\/ancestry-resources\/hunts-of-sedgeford\/hunts-in-world-war-1\/the-medal-group-of-reginald-seager-hunt\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"20333\">awarded the D.S.O.<\/a> for his actions during the war. His poignant account of life in the trenches survives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On retirement in 1925, Reggie was promoted to the full rank of Lt.Col. of the 1<sup>st<\/sup> King&#8217;s Dragoon Guards. At Haileybury he was a keen sportsman and notable long-distance runner. Donald spent a few months as a school-master before joining the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cape_Mounted_Riflemen#Cape_Mounted_Riflemen_(1878%E2%80%931913)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cape Mounted Rifles<\/a> in 1896.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He served in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Boer_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boer War<\/a> with the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Norfolk Regiment where he was mentioned in Kitchener&#8217;s despatches and then with the Native Administration Department in Sekukuniland, including a period as Inspector of Mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solomon_Mahlangu_Regiment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transvaal Scottish Regiment<\/a> at the start of the Great War and took part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_West_Africa_campaign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">German South West Africa campaign<\/a>. When the South African government was requested to send a brigade for action at the Western Front, he joined the 4th Battalion (South African Scottish) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1st_South_African_Infantry_Brigade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South African Infantry Brigade<\/a> and served with them from 1915 to 1918. The South African Infantry Brigade&#8217;s first action was the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Delville_Wood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Battle of Delville Wood<\/a> on the Somme. Subsequently the brigade served at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Arras_(1917)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arras <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Passchendaele\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ypres<\/a>. In 1917 he married Grizel Scott. In early 1918, Donald joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dunsterforce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Military Mission to the Caucasus<\/a> (known as Dunsterforce). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the war, he and Grizel eventually set up home near Pietermaritzburg, South Africa where they brought up three daughters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He died on May 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, 1949.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ella Mary Alice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-d0921e6e wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized wp-container-content-d50df0bc\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/selwyn-family.me.uk\/~chris\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/BlankClose.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19897\" style=\"width:100px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ella Mary Alice<br>(1877)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group wp-container-content-3cf5a658 has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>Born January 28<sup>th<\/sup>, 1877 in Kensington. John was awarded scholarships at Haileybury before going on to specialise in chemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of his work was concerned with researching tanning methods. He attended Haileybury and was with the London and Westminster Bank before taking an administrative post in the tea and rubber plantations of Ceylon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Great War he served at Gallipoli and was said to have been the last soldier evacuated in the withdrawal. She was educated at home with her younger sisters and lived in the various family homes after the Hunts moved from Norfolk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the First World War she travelled to her job in a metalwork factory by motorcycle. She returned to Felmingham, Norfolk with her mother and after her death moved to a bungalow in Aylsham. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gertie had an acute social conscience and supported many charities. It was clear from a young age that Frank would go into the church and he spent a spell as a schoolmaster in order to finance his theological studies at Oriel College, Oxford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frank was ordained in 1911 and worked as a curate in Brighton before joining the staff of Bishop&#8217;s College, Cheshunt. His next post was as curate at St. George&#8217;s Toddington between 1921 and 1924. In 1926 he was appointed Rector of Toddington, Bedfordshire where he remained till his death. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frank was the keeper of his mother&#8217;s photograph collection. When the family moved to Folkestone, Helen attended Effingham School there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She later travelled in Italy and Germany with Miss Buckhurst, her governess. Returning to Heighington, Lincolnshire, she ran a scout group and during the First World War she was a driver with the Royal Flying Corps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helen married Alfred Churchill Matthew of Colombo in 1921 and spent time in Ceylon. The couple moved back to Norfolk and then settled in Hampshire where they brought up three children. She died on April 5<sup>th<\/sup>, 1957 in Winchester.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Further&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">I have made particular study of Reggie and Donald Hunt through the Great War.
