The war diaries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each military unit involved in the war from division down to battalion level wrote up a daily entry describing the events of the day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the battalion level, it is likely that the acting adjutant of the battalion wrote the daily entries. However, at the end of the month, the diary was signed by the commanding officer of the battalion. Since Reggie and, at times, Donald both had command of their respective battalions, their names appear frequently as the monthly signatories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This page was the first war diary signed off by Lt.Col. R.S. Hunt after taking command of the 8th<\/sup> Battalion King’s Own (Royal Lancaster) Regt in October 1916.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sign-off of war diary of 4th SAI for July 1916<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This page is the sign-off page of the war diary for the 4th<\/sup> South African Infantry for the month covering the momentous events at Delville Wood in July 1916. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lt.Col. F.A. Jones, C.O. 4th<\/sup> SAI, had been killed at Bernafay Wood early in the month and been replaced by Lt.Col. D.M. MacLeod. MacLeod was then himself wounded at Delville Wood. So it fell to Major D.R. Hunt, as 2nd<\/sup> in command, to have the command of the the 4th<\/sup> SAI. In that role, Donald signed the monthly 4th<\/sup> SAI diaries for the later months of 1916 until the arrival of Lt.Col. Ewen Christian in Jan. 1917.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Introduction to the time lines <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each year page contains a timeline that shows the progress of the brothers and their respective units month by month through that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the timeline there are stories for each brother with Reggie on the left and Donald on the right. Each story largely focuses on the movements and actions of whichever unit the brother is assigned to at the time. Click on the story title or the “More” button to read the detailed description of that month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each story contains a brief summary of the actions during the course of the month by the unit. Next is a day-by-day summary of actions of the unit whether they were in action at the front, recovering from an action, training or travelling. The summary box is vertically resizable by pulling down on the handle at the very bottom right of the box. Below the summary is a map of the locations that the unit visited during the month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clicking on an entry in the summary box will centre and zoom the map above to the location of that entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very often there is specific information about the actions of the brothers where they are mentioned by name in the war diaries or in other sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
