The next walk is being organised by Jan and Steve and will take place on Friday 6 September. It is one of our occasional away days and will take place in The Quantock Hills. This will be the final Quantocks visit for a while – next year we go to pastures new.
We’ll meet at 09.30am for a 9.45am start at the car park next to Holford Bowling Green. The nearest post code for your Sat Nav is TA5 1SA.
Walk organisers : Jan Merchant, Steve Riches
Jan and Steve have provided the following information about the walk:
- The quickest route (having regard for M5 congestion) appears to be Timsbury – Cheddar Gorge – M5 J22 – M5 J23 – Bristol Rd/Wylds Rd/Western Way – A39 – Nether Stowey – Plough Inn Holford. Turn left immediately before the Plough Inn and follow the lane for 0.3 miles (ignoring turnings to the right) until you reach a fork with a white silk mills sign. Turn right for a few yards and the car park is on the left. It is approximately 45 miles. We suggest leaving Timsbury at 8am.
- The walk is 6.5 miles long.
- There is one long very gentle incline (with a slightly steeper short stretch at the end) up onto the Quantocks.
- The paths on the Quantocks are easy walking but a little stony in places, so it would be a good idea to wear stout shoes/walking boots. We also criss-cross various shallow streams.
- There are 0 stiles.
- There are magnificent views and it’s possible that the heather will be in full bloom
- For the culture vultures amongst you there is a possibility that you might meet Kubla Khan, the Ancient Mariner and a Lime-Tree Bower. Also keep an eye and ear open for steam trains.
- In the event of the weather being poor Jan and Steve have an alternative lower walk which keeps to the sheltered combes of the Quantocks. This walk is 5.47 miles.
