The next walk is being organised by Roger and will take place on Friday 11 September. It will start at Burrington Combe car parking area on the B3134 (OS Explorer Sheet 141 GR 489582 ). We’ll meet at 8.45am for a 9.00am start.
Walk organisers : Roger Sirett
Roger has provided the following information about the walk:
- it is 6.47 miles long.
- there are a number of ‘Uppity Bits ‘ one of which takes us over the highest point on the Mendips and the only mountain in Somerset – Beacon Batch at 1016 feet. This is within the first mile of the walk.
- the other ‘Uppity Bits ‘ are very walkable but they do go on for quite some distance i.e. 1 mile at Velvet Bottom and 0.5 mile at Rains Batch.
- this also means there are some good downhill bits as well!
- the walk includes the lead mining areas of the Mendips around Charterhouse. Some of the group have expressed an interest in this on previous walks.
- it also has a number of stiles as opposed to kissing gates.
- being on the Mendips, the walk is very exposed so we’ll need to be well prepared if the weather is not good (It was beautiful when Roger tested it with far reaching views.)
- about two thirds of the way round there will be a stop ” IN ” St. Hugh’s Church where our own refreshments can be drunk.
- Should the weather not be sympathetic to us then the walk can be short circuited.
