The next walk is being organised by Jan and Steve and will take place on Friday 15 April. It is one of our occasional away day walks and will start at the National Trust car park at Avebury. We’ll meet at 9.30am for a 9.45am start.
Walk organisers : Jan Merchant, Steve Riches
Jan and Steve have provided the following information about the walk:
- The walk is 9.00 miles long. We shall be visiting the majority of the World Heritage sites (Stone Circles, Polishing Stone, Fyfield Down and the grey wethers, The ancient Ridgeway, The Sanctuary, West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill)
- There is one long moderately steep incline out of Avebury and two shorter uppity bits from Fyfield Down and up to the West Kennet Long Barrow
- There are four stiles
- There is one short muddy section when the walk was tested, but the walk is over chalk downland which was firm and dry.
- Lunch will be taken mid-afternoon (3pm) so it would be a good idea to bring water and light snacks for the walk as, unlike recent walks, there isn’t a café on route!
- Although the walk is one of our longer ones there will be regular stops as we take in the features. If any walkers do not feel up to walking the Ridgeway they can return back down the hill to Avebury from the Fyefield Down crosspaths, having completed the Fyefield Down loop. The total length of this shorter version would be 6.2m.
- If any of the group just want to visit Avebury, the NT Museum and Avebury Manor, while away time in the coffee shop and take a short level stroll to Silbury Hill and the Long Barrow (2.5m return) they can meet us for a late lunch at 3pm in the Red Lion.
- The journey to Avebury from Timsbury takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. Different routes are possible but the Radstock- Farleigh Hungerford-Trowbridge-Devizes route is recommended.
