Isle of Purbeck Away Day

The next walk is being organised by Waveney and will take place on FRIDAY 9 JUNE 2017.  It is one of our occasional away days. It will start at the car park at Challow Walkers Car Park, Corfe Castle. We’ll meet at 0900 for a 0915 start.

Walk organisers :

Waveney has provided the following information about the walk:

  • The walk has been included in the top ten walks by The Sunday Times.
  • Corfe Castle is about 2 hours drive from Timsbury.
  • Parking is in Challow Walkers Car Park, Corfe Castle.  From the Wareham direction, enter Corfe Castle and pass the turning to Studland on the left. Take the next turning on the left (Sandy Hill Lane), as the main road bends to the right round the bottom of the castle. The car park is on the left in about 300 yards. Challow Walkers Car Park is small; there is additional parking on the right along Sandy Lane. as you approach the car park. Parking is free.
  • The walk is 10.05 miles, though may be shorter if the weather is inclement.
  • There is one stile.
  • Most of the route is easy walking on the gently undulating ridge of chalk downland and sections of the South West Coast Path.
  • There is a long gradual ‘uppity bit’ at the start of the walk, one short but serious ‘uppity bit’ to the obelisk on Ballard Down above Ulwell and a long gradual ‘uppity bit’ from Old Harry Rocks to Ballard Down.
  • There are no particularly difficult muddy bits.
  • There are no cafes en route, but we will stop for a short while at Old Harry Rocks for a refreshment stop.
  • There are public toilets in Studland about half way round the walk.
  • After lunch, we will walk a short distance to Swanage Rail Station and catch a Swanage Railway steam train for a 20 minute journey back to Corfe Castle. Trains leave at 1520 and 1640 and the fare is £7. If we catch the later train there will be opportunities to enjoy some of the attractions of Swanage.
