Quantocks Away Day

The next walk is being organised by Jan and Steve and will take place on Friday 7 September. It is one of our occasional away days and will take place in The Quantock Hills.

Jan and Steve have provided the following information about the walk:

  • We are covering another part of the Quantocks this year; equally beautiful and let’s hope the sun shines on us again.
  • We’ll meet at 10.00am for coffee at The Foxy Bean at Adscombe Farm, near Over Stowey. For your Sat Nav the post code is TA5 1HN. You should allow at least 1½ hours from Timsbury. Once on the A39 bear left at The Cottage Inn at Keenthorne, just before Nether Stowey. The lanes are mostly single track with passing places. Go straight across the first crossroads and then at the second crossroads go straight across and bear right towards Over Stowey. Take the first turning on the left to Adscombe and The Foxy Bean is just into the private Forestry Commission road (signposted Great Combe) that faces you when you get to a sharp right-hand turn in the lane.
  • We will have a coffee and possibly cake or sandwiches at The Foxy Bean before driving in convey on a Forestry Commission road to Quarry car park where the walk will start. It costs £3 to park using a Pay and Display machine. The road is well defined and gravel based.
  • The walk will start at about 10.45am.
  • The walk is 6.2 miles long.
  • There are toilets near the end of the walk.
  • The walk is moderately undulating with one short steep ‘uppity bit’ and one steep ‘downity bit’.
  • The paths on the Quantocks are easy walking but a little stony in places, so it would be a good idea to wear stout shoes/walking boots.
  • There are 2 easy stiles.
  • It’s possible the heather will be in full bloom
  • As we will be deep into romantic poetry country (You could visit the NT Coleridge Cottage in Nether Stowey after the walk) Jan and Steve wondered if you would enjoy reading out some of your favourite verses or couplets to keep us entertained during the walk. They do hope you respond to this as or I may insist that Steve reads The Ancient Mariner in full.
