Known as Mie Mie, Maria was the daughter of Marchesa Fagniani, a famous eighteenth century beauty and reputedly George A. Selwyn, a well-known rake of the period. In 1798 she married Francis Charles, Lord Yarmouth, later Marquess of Hertford. Romney painted another portrait of the same sitter as a young woman in 1789 (collection of the Earl of Carlisle, c. 1890). Oil on canvas, 15 x 12 inches. The reverse stenciled R. Davy/ 83 Newman Street/ Oxford St. London.
Provenance: Mr. Williamson; by descent to his daughter, Mrs. Hewitt; to her brother-in-law, Major Hewitt; purchased from Hewitt by Thomas Agnew &, Sons, 1902; purchased by Sedelmeyer Gallery, Paris and illustrated in their eighth Hundred Paintings by Old Masters, no. 94, p. 117.
