    • Canon of Winchester
    • Rev. William Carus, M.A., b. 1804, was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated with highest honours in Classics and Mathematics in 1827. He was Senior Fellow and Dean of Trinity College, Incumbent of Great St. Mary's, and Select University Preacher in 1854, 1859, and 1866. He was appointed Canon Residentiary of Winchester, Vicar of Romsey, and Rural Dean in 1851, and was Proctor in Convocation.

      Canon Carus was the author of "Memoirs of Rev. Charles Simeon" and " Life of Bishop Mcllvaine." The Carus Greek Testament Prize at Cambridge was founded in memory of his name. He married, in 1851, Maria Elizabeth, eldest daughter of the Rev. Edward Selwyn, Rector of Hemingford Abbotts, Co. Huntingdon, and died at Bournemouth 27th August, 1891, leaving no issue.
