    Commanded the troops which carried off Princess (later Queen) Anne from S't James's Palace to Lord Dorset's house in Epping Forest to a place of safety at the time of the flight of James ll.25/11/1688



     


    Unexpectedely came into family estate when elder brother killed in duel in 1678.


    Main House Matson near Gloucester (behind Robin Hoods Hill). Had been bought in1517 by Jasper Selwyn.


    Represented Gloucester in 2nd Parliament of William 111, and was again elected in 1701, But was made Governor of Jamaica in 1701 by Queen Anne. He died there after 3 months. Last letter..."My whole family are sick myself excepted.....here is so little pleasure or profit that i begin to"...he was found dead the next day. His wife survived.


    Did not sign will and an Act of Parliament was passed to remedy the defect.


    In the inventory of his stable goods the pillion was valued at more than any of the carriages or horses

    Colonel 2nd Regiment 1691, 22nd infantry 1701.Fought at Battle of Boyne. Fought under Malborough and commanded a brigade in Netherlands under William 3rd. Governor of Tilbury and Gravesend Forts.


    Wrote letters to his wife before siege of Naumur 1695

    Was Aide de camp to Duke of Marlborough. Captain of 3rd Foot. His mother tried to get a reduction in the purchase money of his commission and was sharply rebuffed by Duke of Marlborough.



    With wife attained the high regard of George 11appointed Equerry and Treasurer to Queen Caroline, he served with the King at Dettingen, in memory of which the Queen gave Mrs Selwyn a small service of Dresden china (last known of in possession Earl Sydney)



    Represented Gloucester 1727-1751. Was periodically entrusted with the Lamprey pie which the City periodically presented to Prince of Wales.



    Rented Dawson Hill in Bexley, his London house Cleveland court (now Cleveland Sq) was in 1888 still held by his descendants the Earl of Sydney.



    When his mother died he inherited her share of the Scadbury estate and acquired the shares of his Aunts Lady Hewitt and Mrs Farrington (wife's mother).


    Passed all of the estates except Scadbury to his cousin Thomas ffarington

    "That thing as Mr Hayward says is the law and no gentleman in the county can gainsay it" was the remark of the common folk about him.


    He used to say Hey the devil instead of well in the beginning of his sentences on prisoners as well as in common conversation.


    When the late John Curtis Hayward was introduced to Charles 6th Duke of Beaufort the latter said to him: "Now what relation are you to old Mr Hayward who used to wear a cauliflower wig and say Hey the Devil"


    he was in fact great grandson.

    Was painted by Reynolds. Always looked sleepy which enhanced his jokes as though they came from nowhere.
