Was on guard Lincoln's Inn fields at execution of William Lord Russell 1683 after Rye House plot. Escort to Princess Anne when she fled.
Commanded the troops which carried off Princess (later Queen) Anne from S't James's Palace to Lord Dorset's house in Epping Forest to a place of safety at the time of the flight of James ll.25/11/1688
Unexpectedely came into family estate when elder brother killed in duel in 1678.
Main House Matson near Gloucester (behind Robin Hoods Hill). Had been bought in1517 by Jasper Selwyn.
Represented Gloucester in 2nd Parliament of William 111, and was again elected in 1701, But was made Governor of Jamaica in 1701 by Queen Anne. He died there after 3 months. Last letter..."My whole family are sick myself excepted.....here is so little pleasure or profit that i begin to"...he was found dead the next day. His wife survived.
Did not sign will and an Act of Parliament was passed to remedy the defect.
In the inventory of his stable goods the pillion was valued at more than any of the carriages or horses

Colonel 2nd Regiment 1691, 22nd infantry 1701.Fought at Battle of Boyne. Fought under Malborough and commanded a brigade in Netherlands under William 3rd. Governor of Tilbury and Gravesend Forts.

Directed in her will that she be buried in linen, and that her maid should inform of it so that she could pay the penalty for not being buried in wool. she left her Granddaughter Frances her best purse with all the money which should be in it at the time of her death

Notes:
Was Aide de camp to Duke of Marlborough. Captain of 3rd Foot. His mother tried to get a reduction in the purchase money of his commission and was sharply rebuffed by Duke of Marlborough.
With wife attained the high regard of George 11appointed Equerry and Treasurer to Queen Caroline, he served with the King at Dettingen, in memory of which the Queen gave Mrs Selwyn a small service of Dresden china (last known of in possession Earl Sydney)
Represented Gloucester 1727-1751. Was periodically entrusted with the Lamprey pie which the City periodically presented to Prince of Wales.
Rented Dawson Hill in Bexley, his London house Cleveland court (now Cleveland Sq) was in 1888 still held by his descendants the Earl of Sydney.
When his mother died he inherited her share of the Scadbury estate and acquired the shares of his Aunts Lady Hewitt and Mrs Farrington (wife's mother).
Passed all of the estates except Scadbury to his cousin Thomas ffarington

Left Oldbury to nephew William Hayward Winstone.
Armorial tankard made for her wedding arms of Winstone impaling Hayward. Sold in 1974 at Sothebys for £4500.
Jan 1758 a letter from her giving a character reference for Francis Watts her cousin who was illiterate at the time but learn't to write later.

Appears that a re-grant of Arms was made to him.
"That thing as Mr Hayward says is the law and no gentleman in the county can gainsay it" was the remark of the common folk about him.
He used to say Hey the devil instead of well in the beginning of his sentences on prisoners as well as in common conversation.
When the late John Curtis Hayward was introduced to Charles 6th Duke of Beaufort the latter said to him: "Now what relation are you to old Mr Hayward who used to wear a cauliflower wig and say Hey the Devil"
he was in fact great grandson.

Partial to little girls especially Mie-Mie daughter of his friend the Duke of Queensbury and an Italian Marchioness Mlle Fagniani He left her £33 000 she later travelled on the continent with her lover and figured in Vanity Fair as Marchioness of Steyne
Interested in death and executions. Was present in Paris at the torture and death of Damiens who had made an attempt on life of Louis XV
On deayh of older brother became wit bon viveur and gambler.
Represented Gloucester for some years.
After his father and his brother's death in 1751 settled the entail of the Gloucester estate on Mr Townsend's male heirs his nephew in law.

Portrait described in Inventory possibly given to Winchester College by Tim Heywood as "Insurance policy for sons acceptance."
Was painted by Reynolds. Always looked sleepy which enhanced his jokes as though they came from nowhere.
