    Brother officer of William Selwyn who wrote often about the disbanding of a regiment known as ffaringdons foot at the close of the war in Flanders, was reformed later under Thomas and became 29th infantry. Descended from old Lancashire family

    Interested in death and executions. Was present in Paris at the torture and death of Damiens who had made an attempt on life of Louis XV


    On deayh of older brother became wit bon viveur and gambler.


    Represented Gloucester for some years.


    After his father and his brother's death in 1751 settled the entail of the Gloucester estate on Mr Townsend's male heirs his nephew in law.

    Portrait described in Inventory possibly given to Winchester College by Tim Heywood as "Insurance policy for sons acceptance."


    Was painted by Reynolds. Always looked sleepy which enhanced his jokes as though they came from nowhere.


    Probably bi-sexual but not a lot of evidence


    Instructed that all his letters be destroyed
