- While at Oxford refused to take oath of allegiance and emigrated to New England where he subsequently became Governor of Massachusettes. He then returned and became MP for Kingston-upon-Hull. He had 14 children. A convinced republican he
opposed Cromwell's election as protector and was imprisoned in Carisbrooke Castle. On the accession of Charles 11 was one of only 20 people excluded from the general amnesty and spent 2 years in the Tower. He was beheaded on Tower Hill 1662
with the noise of drums and trumpets drowning his dying speeech.
