  • Notes
    • Edward Twaights, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in the reigns of Henry VII and whose arms the family still quarter, together with those of Segrave. The Lord Warden of the Cinque ("Five", in Norman French) Ports was originally in charge of the Cinque Ports, a group of five port towns on the southeast coast of England. Burke claims 'This Desent of the Antient Family of the Curteises in the County of Kent, Gentlemen, faithfully collected out of the Office of Armes the publicke Records of the Kingdom Private Evidences of this Family and other venerable Monuments of Antiquity'. This document, written on four membranes of parchment, is a copy of a pedigree exemplified by William Segar, Garter King of Arms, from the original in the hands of Sir George Curteis of Otterden in Kent in 1619; the bottom membrane is turned up and the remains of a seal-tag survive. From the reference to armorial glass at Romney church in 1612, it is likely that the original pedigree was compiled in that year. The pedigree closes with a large achievement of the arms of Norton Curteis, eldest son of George Curteis of Maidstone, with Curteis (argent, a chevron sable, three bulls' heads caboshed gules) quartering Twaights and Segrave. Those arms derive from the marriage of Thomas Curteis of Appledore, who died in 1527, to Joan, daughter and co-heir of Edward Twaights, Lord Warden of the Five Ports. Contents: Pedigree of the Curteis family of Tenterden and elsewhere in Kent, drawing descent from Stephen Curteis of Appledore, c1380, to 1612. Information quoted from escheator's inquisition, wills at Canterbury, armorial glass in Romney church in 1612, an armorial roofboss in the cloisters of Canterbury Cathedral, a pedigree of Cobham by Robert Glover, Somerset Herald (d1588) and armorial glass in a chapel in Chilham church. Subscribed: 'This Coate of Armes doune to Norton Curteis Eldest Son of George Curteis of Maidstone, is a true Copie, taken out of the Originall now in the hands of Sir George Curteis of Otterdein in Kent which was Exemplified by the Authority of the office of Armes testified by the Scale and confirmed under the hand of William Segar Garter Principall Kinge of Armes Anno Domini 1619'.
