After the Restoration of Charles 11the Bettenhams occupied in Chislehurst that position which for 3 centuries had been held by the Walsinghams. Scadbury and Chislehurst manors were both purchased by Sir Richard (of Layer de la Haye) who was created Baronet in 1666.
- He resided at Chislehurst for 20 years, but kept his Shrievalty at Scadbury.
