is the soldier surgeon who was the sole survivor in the 1st anglo afghan war whose portrait is/was hanging in the tate gallery.he was the only one out of approx 17000 people that survived the trek of about a hundred miles to jalalabad and even then it is said they let him go to tell his story.to glean more of this story try and find ( a lecture to the history group by peter mcloughlin)
Also survived the siege of Lucknow and died in his bed in Scotland 15 years later.
