Sir John wears a double breasted navy blue jacket with two rows of silver buttons. At the far left on a table beside him, a quill pen stands in an inkpot, beside a partly visible book. The setting is the corner of a sitting room, with part of a portrait of a woman in Regency dress seen above a closed door in the background. Heavy pink curtains hang at upper right, and at left, where the curtains hangs over a gilt-framed picture.

Professor Charlotte Macdonald of the Victoria University of Wellington has written an extensive appraisal of Sarah's life and work entitled "Between religion and empire: Sarah Selwyn's Aotearoa/New Zealand, Eton and Lichfield, England, c.1840s-1900". The article was published in the Journal of the Canadian Historical Association / Revue de la Société historique du Canada, Volume 19, numéro 2, 2008, p. 43-75.
