    Notes:

    Was on guard Lincoln's Inn fields at execution of William Lord Russell 1683 after Rye House plot. Escort to Princess Anne when she fled.


    Commanded the troops which carried off Princess (later Queen) Anne from S't James's Palace to Lord Dorset's house in Epping Forest to a place of safety at the time of the flight of James ll.25/11/1688



     


    Unexpectedely came into family estate when elder brother killed in duel in 1678.


    Main House Matson near Gloucester (behind Robin Hoods Hill). Had been bought in1517 by Jasper Selwyn.


    Represented Gloucester in 2nd Parliament of William 111, and was again elected in 1701, But was made Governor of Jamaica in 1701 by Queen Anne. He died there after 3 months. Last letter..."My whole family are sick myself excepted.....here is so little pleasure or profit that i begin to"...he was found dead the next day. His wife survived.


    Did not sign will and an Act of Parliament was passed to remedy the defect.


    In the inventory of his stable goods the pillion was valued at more than any of the carriages or horses

    Colonel 2nd Regiment 1691, 22nd infantry 1701.Fought at Battle of Boyne. Fought under Malborough and commanded a brigade in Netherlands under William 3rd. Governor of Tilbury and Gravesend Forts.


    Wrote letters to his wife before siege of Naumur 1695

    William married Albinia Bettinson on 26 May 1681 in Westminster Abbey. Albinia (daughter of Richard Bettinson and Albinia Wray) was born in 1657 in Scadbury Park, Kent, England; died on 29 Dec 1737. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Her grandson George Selwyn the Wit said of her that her manners were as good as if she had always lived at court and her humility as great as if she had always lived in a cottage.


     



    Came to live at Quedgley after her husband's death with her daughter Margaret who had also recently become a widow.


    Brought back her husband's remains from jamaica to be buried at Matson.


    She brought with her the Selwyn pictures which remained there despite Gen Selwyn only leaving them to his widow for life, and after her death to his daughters successively for life. Moved back to Matson.


    Built the church at Matson.


    Account book in possession of Paul CH at Woolstrop referred to in Albinia book, about journey through France written by her daughter Margaret.
