6. | Hon Thomas Townsend was born on 2 Jun 1701 (son of Townsend, 2nd Viscount Tow); died on 21 May 1780 in Frognal Kent, England; was buried in Chislehurst. Notes:
An accomplished scholar represented Cambridge in 6 Parliaments. In conjunction with the Hon Edward Finch in 1752 originated tha annual prizes called Members Prizes.
Col Selwyn sold him Scadbury and the manor of Chislehurst. He pulled down the ancient manor of Scadbury with a view to rebuilding it but never did, as he was broken-hearted at the early death of his wife. He purchasedthe fine brick mansion of Frognal adjoining Scadbury Park
Thomas married Albinia Lady Selwyn on 2 May 1730. Albinia (daughter of John Selwyn, Colonel and Mary ffarringdon) was born in 1715; died on 7 Sep 1739 in Matson, Gloucestershire, England; was buried in Matson, Gloucester, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:
Was Aide de camp to Duke of Marlborough. Captain of 3rd Foot. His mother tried to get a reduction in the purchase money of his commission and was sharply rebuffed by Duke of Marlborough.
With wife attained the high regard of George 11appointed Equerry and Treasurer to Queen Caroline, he served with the King at Dettingen, in memory of which the Queen gave Mrs Selwyn a small service of Dresden china (last known of in possession Earl Sydney)
Represented Gloucester 1727-1751. Was periodically entrusted with the Lamprey pie which the City periodically presented to Prince of Wales.
Rented Dawson Hill in Bexley, his London house Cleveland court (now Cleveland Sq) was in 1888 still held by his descendants the Earl of Sydney.
When his mother died he inherited her share of the Scadbury estate and acquired the shares of his Aunts Lady Hewitt and Mrs Farrington (wife's mother).
Passed all of the estates except Scadbury to his cousin Thomas ffarington
