Bishop Selwyn, bareheaded, addressing his Maori congregation, some of whom are tattoed and carrying feathered walking spears; some are in skin and flax mats. In the water in the foreground may be seen the carved prow of a Maori canoe, and the stern of the Bishop's boat; in the background is a whare, a stockade, a flax bush in flower, trees and hills.
